SHIV-RAATRI WAS TO PROPITIATE SHIV-DEV : WHO IS HE AND WHAT DOES HE DO
...........Part 1 of many more to come....
(Sanskrit words are in italics. English equivalent of
Sanskrit language is very difficult as a lot of Vedic science and words do
not exist in the European languages in a word form. A glossary of Sanskrit words
is being prepared to be posted on this web site soon for the understanding of
the readers who do not know Sanskrit or its derivative languages in use in
present day India)
In science of ved which explains creation, vishnu
is sleeping on the
bed of coils of serpent anant during the pralay of a kalpa.
pralay is the time when all
creation is dissolved back into its creator, prajaapati
brahmaa and stays dissolved for 4.32 billion
years. A kalpa is a time duration of 4.32 billion years also called a brahmaa's
day in which creation exists. A brahmaa's night of another kalpa
of 4.32
billion years in which the creation remains dissolved in brhmah
or para-brhmah or parmaatmaa
or ishvar..
At the
start of a kalpa of creation a lotus is born out of the navel of vishnu and
brahmaa is born in the lotus. brahmaa is instructed by para-brhmah
to create all
the worlds para-brhmah wishes to be created. para-brhmah is an entity without
any form containing all the gnan (knowledge) and shakti
(energy) required to create, sustain and
dissolve all the worlds created. para-brhmah's creative energy is called mahaa-maya.
mahaa-maya is activated to create, sustain and dissolve all creations
by the chaitaniya of para-brhmah.
chaitaniya is the
shakti of Para-Brhmah which
makes everything in a creation mobile and animate. mahaa-maayaa is the
supreme causal agent of para-brhmah assigned to give all the gnan
and shakti to each particle of creation to co-exist with the rest of the
creation.
After brahmaa-dev is born, he is given energy which is called shakti. The
name of the shakti given to Brahmaa is sarasvati. Through
sarasvati, brahmaa gets gnan to create all that is wished by
para-brhmah.
During his
creating of the worlds, brahmaa was angered at some of his creations for not
furthering their progeny. Out of this anger was born rudra
commonly known
as shiv.
Shiv-dev was
assigned a shakti called paarvati
by mahaa-maayaa. shiv-dev
has been assigned to perform the main task
of dissolution of the creation at the time of pralay. Apart
from the work of dissolution, shiv-dev is also
depended on to remove obstacles of any kind which occurs in the creation to
hinder the sustenance of the creation. vishnu-dev wakes up from his slumber
effected by yog-nindra when brahmaa-dev starts creating and is given by
mahaa-maayaa the shakti called laxmi or
shri. vishnu-dev is assigned by
para-brhmah to sustain the creation
which has been created by brahmaa.
paarvati-devi who is the shakti of
shiv-bhagvan takes on a female form and becomes his wife. shiv-bhagvan also has another wife called
gangaa-devi. shiv-bhagvan resides on top of
mahaa-meru mountain. shiv-bhagvan and
paarvati-devi have two sons, ganpati
and subra-maanyam or
kaartikey and .
Some more sons and daughters are born of him through other women for serving the some
definite purposes in the creation. Some of his other children are hanuman
and indra-jit (son of raavan),
shiv-bhagvan has several shiv-ansh
(partial incarnations) to serve some definite purposes in the creation. Each
incarnation has partial shakti of shiv-bhagvan. Some of these incarnations are
durvas-muni,
some of the vaanaro (monkeys who made up the army of
shri raam when he invaded lankaa
of raavan), shakti who was born as son to
vashistha-muni, and varun-dev (the
dev presiding over oceans).
shiv-bhagvan is said to be very easy to propitiate through bhakti
(devotion) and tapas (penance) and easily once propitiated grants
boons desired by his bhakto (devotees).
shiv-bhagvan is famous for saving creations from destruction as told in
puranic
literature. shiv-bhagvan helps all the 33 karor (330 million)
devataao. Each devataa is a shakti which
empowers the dedication function in a creation.
shiv-bhagvan is also famous for his anger. When angry he is reputed to have burned any one who
makes him angry with his third eye. When angered, he is also reputed to
fight till pacified or till the other party is vanquished or destroyed.. Major examples of his anger and saving incidents are his clash with
vishnu, burning of kaam-dev, consuming kalakut poison when the ocean of milk was
churned, destruction of dakshaa prajaapati's
(his father-in-law) yagna, burning of
cities tripuraa of asuraao, fight with surya-dev, making of five
paandavo from five indra-devo, fights with
mahaa-suraa and vrtra-suraa.
