AFFLUENZA = NEW DISEASE OF WEALTHY....WHEN YOU HAVE MONEY AS THE ULTIMATE LIVING TOOL..... Posted by Vishva News Reporter on January 13, 2009 |
NEW DISEASE OF WEALTH = AFFLUENZA
AFFLUENZA has
nothing to do with the killer influenza but the following origin,
characteristics and "no cure" was the gist of the information presented
about the new human diseases called
Affluenza at Canadian Paediatric Society
conference in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada:
- Affluenza
happened during the industrialization period and during urbanization
with man's life focussed on creation of wealth only at any cost;
- and now we are seeing mass immigration in which people are moving to
find easier and more wealth and families are increasingly becoming more
fragmented;
- fragmented families are telling their children they can achieve all
their dreams and goals....which in turn sets them up for low self-esteem
and low self-worth when things don’t go their way;
- children in fragmented families keep hearing the message that they can
‘do anything,’ but if
they are constantly given everything, they may not know
how to achieve their goals and when they fail, they may have poor coping
skills, and an intolerance for discomfort;
- and such children in fragmented families face risk of for childhood
depression called Affluenza
which could include brain injury, chronic anxiety, medical illness,
abuse, abandonment, learning disorders, genetics (family history) and
societal factors.......

vED OF HUMAN DEPRESSION
The Canadian Paediatric Society says that mental health problems are
projected to grow by 50 per cent in the next decade or so. Already, up
to eight per cent of children experience depression and one out of five
teenagers experiences at least one episode with symptoms that persist
for at least two weeks.
Major depressive disorder, also known as major depression,
unipolar depression, clinical depression, or simply
depression, is a
mental disorder characterized by a pervasive low mood, loss of
interest in usual activities and diminished ability to experience
pleasure. (From Wikipedia....you can enlighten yourself fully by

Canadian
Paediatric Society Conference:
- ‘I feel sick. I
have to go home and count my money’
---Teen depression often caused by ‘AFFLUENZA"
Edmonton Journal:
June 26, 2008: Pamela Fayerman, Victoria
Mental health experts have coined the term
“affluenza” to describe a newly recognized cause
of depression in children and youth, delegates to the Canadian
Paediatric Society conference here heard this week.
“When people have everything in a material sense, they may have
perfectionistic expectations and unrealistic goals,” said B.C.
Children’s Hospital psychiatrist Jane Garland in an interview, following
her presentation to delegates at a session on mental health problems in
children and youth.
“Children keep hearing the message that they can ‘do anything,’ but if
they are constantly given everything, they may not know how to achieve
their goals and when they fail, they may have poor coping skills, and an
intolerance for discomfort,” she said.
Telling children they can achieve all their dreams and goals sets them
up for low self-esteem and low self-worth when things don’t go their
way, said Garland, who is head of the Mood and Anxiety Clinic at
Children’s Hospital.
Long-established risk factors for childhood depression include brain
injury, chronic anxiety, medical illness, abuse, abandonment, learning
disorders, genetics (family history) and societal factors, which Garland
puts under the category “affluenza.” She said mental health problems
often increase when societies are going through upheaval.
“It happened during the industrialization period and during
urbanization, and now we are seeing mass immigration in which people are
moving and families are increasingly becoming more fragmented.”
Children who are overly indulged or who use a depressive coping
style may develop what she calls:
- “learned
helplessness” and can be heard saying things such as,
- “Nothing ever works for me,” or
- “There’s no use trying,”
or
- “Nothing I do ever makes a difference.”

The Canadian Paediatric Society says that mental health problems are
projected to grow by 50 per cent in the next decade or so. Already, up
to eight per cent of children experience depression and one out of five
teenagers experiences at least one episode with symptoms that persist
for at least two weeks.
As to clinical trials of medications, she noted that patients often have
a more “robust” response to medications in such trials, while in real
life, medications may not be the magic bullet. So to elicit the same
kind of therapeutic response as that seen in research trials, she
advises doctors to ensure they set up frequent appointments with
depressed patients.
“It gives them a future and you are part of it, and it can make a huge
difference.”
Teenagers appreciate practical solutions so Garland uses a prescription
pad to make a list of all the things she wants patients to do to feel
better, including getting more exercise, sunlight and peer counselling,
and avoiding drugs and alcohol.
She also recommends that parents make their kids smoothies for
breakfast, with fatty acid omega oils and protein “so they aren’t
running on empty.”
Some research has shown that omega oils may help prevent or even treat
depression, so she recommends patients either get more of it through
dietary sources like salmon, or in the form of supplements (2,000 mg per
day).
ºThere are glaring differences in the things that trigger depression in
boys and girls, she said.
“Girls have more interpersonal stresses caused by friends and rejection.
Boys have more achievement stresses caused by things like not making
sports teams.”
When children are diagnosed with depression, Garland said families
should marshal the help of mental health teams, extended family members,
school counsellors, youth drop-in centres, group support meetings, and
healthy friends as positive supports. |
