The
scenario
I recently lost my job. I've been in the same industry for more than 20
years, working my way up.
But I think I've gone as far as I can go, and I'm tired of working in
this industry.
I'd like to get into an entirely new field. I don't know what it might
be, and I want to know how to figure it out.
Given all of my experience has been in the same industry, how far afield
can I realistically go?
And how do I decide what field it would be and how to get there?
The
advice
You are experiencing what many people are with the economy beginning its
recovery. The good news is that many companies are starting to hire
again after the downsizings over the last 18 months.
It sounds like you are ready for a career change.
Your challenge is to decide what type of job or business you would like
in the next phase of your career. There are a number of steps you will
want to follow.
Make a list of the things that you love to do and are passionate
about. Focus on what you are truly interested in.
Imagine that you could have any job or business in the world.
What would it be?
Remember when you were a child and you used to dream about what you
would be when you grew up.
Take time to envision
how you would like to spend the rest of your career and life.
People's second or retirement careers are often
the most successful because
they do what they love as opposed to what they or
others think they should do.
|
Take inventory
Make a list of all of your gifts, talents, skills, experiences and
background. These can range from technical to organizational skills,
from athletic to creative talents.
Make note of what you have been recognized for in your life, career,
sports, skills and hobbies. Consider what makes you stand out from the
crowd.
Where
would you like to work?
Make a list of the companies
and people that you would like to work for or the
businesses that you would like to be involved in. Do your research on
them. Check out their websites, annual reports and business
publications.
Set up interviews
Set up information interviews
with key senior officials in the companies you have
identified. Ask them about their career paths and current jobs. Tell
them what you know about the company and their competition and how much
you would like to work there.
Ask them what advice they would
give you to get into their company or business.
Thank them for their time and say that if a full-time or contract
position comes open in their company or business that you would love to
work or train with them.
If you receive advice that you need further training or experience then
enroll in the courses or take
the opportunity to get the practical, volunteer or
professional experience that is required.
Join and attend
professional, technical or
business organizations where the people you want to be working with
belong. Ask if one of the experienced officials in the organization will
mentor you and share his or her experience on how to get ahead in the
business.
Remember to network
and follow up
with individuals in your new industry, profession or business. They will
be pivotal in helping you find those inside jobs that are never posted
or in referring business and clients your way.
