Poll shows high marks for Obama on Tucson,

low regard for political dialogue

Americans overwhelmingly describe the tone of political discourse in the country as negative, verging on angry, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, but more than half say the culture did not contribute to the shootings in Tucson that killed six people and wounded 13, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

Evaluations of President Obama's handling of the Jan. 8 tragedy are highly positive across the political spectrum, with nearly eight in 10 giving him high marks for his response to the incident. A robust 71 percent of Republicans say they approve of his leadership following the shootings.

The strong reviews of the president's response to the Arizona incident - which included giving a prime-time eulogy at a memorial service for the victims - have helped boost Obama's overall approval rating to its highest point since last April. Fully 54 percent of all Americans now approve of the way he is handling his job as president, while 43 percent disapprove.

Speaking at the memorial service for those killed in the Tucson shooting, President Obama said, "those who died here, those who saved lives here - they help me believe."

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin (R) releases a statement Wednesday morning denouncing efforts to blame her for Saturday's Tucson shooting rampage.

AMERICANS SAY ABOUT THE ABOVE....

Palin says criticism won't make her 'sit down ... shut up'

Sarah Palin called on all Americans to engage in more civil political debate in the wake of the Tucson shooting but, in an interview on Fox News on Monday, said she would not be silenced or deterred by criticism from her opponents.

Palin also said she had not decided whether to run for president in 2012 and would make an announcement about her future at a later time.

"I am not going to sit down, I'm not going to shut up," the former Alaska governor said in her first interview since the Tucson shootings that killed six people, left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in critical condition and wounded 12 others.

Palin added, "It's our right to vigorously yet respectfully debate ideas and intentions in this country. I'm going to continue down that path. And if that leads to be a candidate for a high office, then I will announce that at the appropriate time."

In the hours after the shootings, Palin was attacked by critics mostly on the left, who cited her posting of a map with crosshairs on congressional districts of 20 Democrats she was urging followers to defeat last November. Among those listed was Giffords, who criticized Palin at the time.

When Palin posted a video Wednesday defending herself, she came under further criticism for using the term "blood libel" to describe the actions of those who were attacking her and other conservatives.

Palin's egocentric umbrage

In the spirit of civil discourse, I'd like to humbly suggest that Sarah Palin please consider being quiet for a while. Perhaps a great while.

At the risk of being bold, I might observe that her faux-presidential address about the Tucson massacre seemed to fall somewhat flat, drawing comparisons to the least attractive public moments of such figures as Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew. I could go so far as to observe that Palin almost seemed to portray herself as a collateral victim. Surely a former governor of Alaska - who served the better part of an entire term - would never seek to give the impression that she views any conceivable event, no matter how distant or tragic, as being All About Sarah.

Yet this is the unfortunate impression that Palin's videotaped peroration seems to have left. I am at a loss to recommend any course of corrective action other than an extended period of abstinence from Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites.
