The
Athabasca oil sands
(colloquially known as the
Athabasca tar sands,
although there is no
tar
present) are large deposits of
bitumen,
or extremely
heavy crude oil,
located in northeastern
Alberta,
Canada
- roughly centred on the
boomtown
of
Fort McMurray.
These
oil sands,
hosted in the
McMurray Formation,
consist of a mixture of crude bitumen (a semi-solid form of crude oil),
silica sand, clay minerals, and water. The Athabasca deposit is the
largest reservoir of crude bitumen in the world and the largest of three
major oil sands deposits in Alberta, along with the nearby
Peace River
and
Cold Lake
deposits. Together, these oil sand deposits lie under 141,000 square
kilometres (54,000 sq mi) of sparsely populated
boreal forest
and
muskeg
(peat
bogs)
and contain about 1.7 trillion barrels (270×10^9 m3)
of bitumen in-place, comparable in magnitude to the world's total proven
reserves of conventional
petroleum.
Although the CEO of Shell Canada, Clive Mather, estimates Canada's
reserves to be 2 trillion barrels or more, essentially 8 times more than
Saudi Arabia, the IEA (International Energy Agency) lists Canada's
reserves as being 178 billion barrels. With modern unconventional
oil production technology, at least 10% of these deposits, or about 170
billion barrels (27×10^9 m3)
were considered to be economically recoverable at 2006 prices, making
Canada's total
proven reserves
the second largest in the world, after
Saudi Arabia's.
The Athabasca deposit is the only large oil sands
reservoir
in the world which is suitable for large-scale
surface mining,
although most of it can only be produced using more recently developed
in-situ
technology......PLEASE CLICK

......Ethics of Canadian
oil companies overseas challenged....
.....U of A
professor tells industry group to come clean.....

A University of Alberta economics professor has challenged a
pro-oilsands industry group, endorsed this week by members of Prime
Minister Stephen Harper's cabinet, to come clean on Canadian companies
that are running operations in "conflict" regions of the world.
"I think it's a question worth raising," said Andrew Leach, an associate
professor of natural resources, energy and environment at the Alberta
School of Business.
"The whole ethical oil (argument) has pushed this
stuff too far." Leach, who writes a popular energy, climate and oilsands
blog, said he could only name one company in the sector, Cenovus, that
has no operations in any of the undemocratic states that are being
criticized in advertising sponsored by the group, which calls itself
ethicaloil.org.
The pro-oilsands organization has recently been targeted
by legal threats from the Saudi Arabian government, which warned some
Canadian media outlets not to run the ads which blasted the oil-rich
nation's record on women's rights.
But Leach said many major companies in the oilsands, including CNRL,
ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Marathon, hell, Suncor and Total,
have their own operations in areas that the marketing campaign would
describe as "conflict regions" such as Nigeria, Libya, Iran or Yemen.
While federal cabinet ministers Jason Kenney and Joe Oliver both
defended the advertising and criticized the Saudi Arabian government
this week, Leach warned that the message could also cause headaches for
the Canadian producers that have activities overseas.
"This is an uneasy thing, I expect, for the companies and for (the
industry association) and others, which is why you haven't seen too much
engagement on this front," Leach said.
A spokesman from the Oil Sands Developers Group, an industry
association, could not immediately be reached for comment, but Alykhan
Velshi, a former aide to Kenney who now writes the ethicaloil.org blog,
suggested that these overseas operations should not damage the
reputation of the Canadian product.
|
"Our campaign isn't about any one particular company, it's about the
product," aid. "Look, there are publicly traded companies that
operate in Canada in all sorts of industries that have shareholders from
across the world and that doesn't taint the product itself.
So for
example, (if there is) a Chinese individual who owns shares in a private
highway, that doesn't change the fact that it's a Canadian highway."
Climate change scientists and academies of science from ever major
country in the world say that human activity, mainly through the
consumption of fossil fuels such as oil - regardless of where it's from
- is dramatically changing the composition of the atmosphere, provoking
changes in weather patterns that are causing damage to both ecosystems
and the economy.
But statistics compiled by Environment Canada show that greenhouse gas
pollution from oilsands companies, which require an energy-intensive
production process, have jumped 300 per cent since 1990, exceeding those
of all cars on Canadian roads, not including light-duty trucks, and
cancelling out reductions in emissions from other sectors.
The latest
federal data also shows that the oilsands producers are no longer
reducing the pollution per barrel of oil produced, contradicting claims
made in a separate industry-sponsored marketing campaign.
Melissa Melissa Blake, mayor of Wood Buffalo, who is featured in the ads
sponsored by the pro-oilsands group, has said she was never asked for
permission and was not pleased about the campaign.
She has urged all
sides in the debate to stop exaggerating their claims and deal with the
facts about the pros and cons of development.
