USA CONGRESSMAN ACKNOWLEDGES
CONTRIBUTION BY USA'S
veDik CITIZENS
From:
THE HINDU: August 13, 2004:
Republican Congressman and Co-chairman of the India Caucus Joe Wilson, has
reiterated his support for a Diwali stamp proposal, saying it would "send a
positive message to the Indian American community".
"I believe the issuance of a Diwali stamp would send a positive message to the
Indian American community about their assimilation and acceptance into
American society", he said in a letter to Dr. Virginia H. Noelke, Chairwoman
of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.
Wilson, whose father spent time in India during World War II said his father
told him how "warm and welcoming the people of India were".
The Congressman who began working with the Indian American community in South
Carolina since 1978, performing real estate closings for the Indian Americans,
said he found many Indian American families to be "very hard working,
entrepreneurial and proud to be American."
Nearly 40 per cent of all hotels in South Carolina are owned by Indian
Americans, an important figure since hospitality is the number one industry in
the State, he said.
Wilson who will lead a delegation of Members of Congress to India during the
August recess wrote it would be a "wonderful way to commemorate the successes
of the Indian American community in America by having the Citizens' Stamp
Advisory Committee approve the finances of a Diwali stamp this year".
